    The novel features Charles Babbage (1791-1871), an English mathematician and inventor credited with having created the first automatic digital computer, and Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890), who is being hunted by Spring Heeled Jack and experiencing hallucinations about a parallel reality. Burton and his companions then embark on an expedition through time which drives them into a steampunk-like future where an authoritarian intelligence rules over the British Empire.
