    The Daughter of Doctor Moreau
    2022 - Moreno-Garcia, Silvia
The Daughter of Doctor Moreau is loosely based on The Island of Doctor Moreau, published by H. G. Wells in 1896. It follows the life of Carlota Moreau and her father in a Mexican hacienda. The hacienda is inhabited by the multiple hybrids created by Dr. Moreau as part of his research to provide Hernando Izalde, the hacienda’s owner, with a human-animal hybrid workforce. Carlota is herself one of these beings, the only one of the hybrids who doesn’t display animalistic features because of the injections that her father administers on a regular basis. Carlota’s resemblance to her jaguar part is seen whenever she displays anger or aggressiveness. After multiple failed experiments, Dr. Moreau’s funding is cut off by Izalde and Carlota discovers she and the other hybrids are in mortal danger. In the end, she uses her inheritance to help the hybrids and foster her interest in medicine, wishing to establish a clinic to help others. The focus of the novel is primarily on Carlota’s interest in scientific research as well as on Dr. Moreau’s research experiments with crossbreeding.
