The novel depicts a communist dystopia envisioned by author Etienne Cabet. It follows the journey of a British lord, Clarisdall, to the island nation of Icaria. To his surprise, he discovers a utopian society where democracy and human rights thrive, money does not exist, and education is free. The book about Icaria is even mentioned by Karl Marx in his letters to the German philosopher Arnold Ruge.
