This book is set in the year of 2021 and describes a world where humanity is facing their extinction due to global infertility. The fact that no children have been born in the past 25 years bought the society to collapse, which is the center focus in the story. The narration starts with the presentation of the main character, Theo Faron. He is an academic who happens to be the cousin to the Warden (dictatorial ruler) of England, Xan Lyppiatt. Theo's journey from apathy to activism is a major theme as he eventually meets other characters and gets gradually more involved with a group of rebels (called Five Fishes) seeking to challenge the regime and restore dignity and hope to society. Theo, who begins the novel as a detached and passive individual, evolves into a determined and courageous figure, embarking on a journey that could risk his life for the unborn child, which symbolizes hope and salvation. This novel, which has the central themes of despair, hope, totalitarianism, and the potential for human regeneration, has an ambiguous ending, in where Teo takes on a leadership role. Yet, the future of humanity, despite the birth of the child, remains unclear, leaving it up to the reader to imagine how it will continue
