| dc.description.informations | PREFACE * pp. III-V O autor começa o seu prefácio gabando-se de que o leitor encontrará novidade nestes volumes que participam de uma grande lista de autores cujo tema é a guerra na Península ("[...] the glorious operations of the British Army, for Rescuing Portugal and Spain from the grasp of the invader [...]") Adverte, depois, para o facto de a sua obra se tratar de um romance onde história e ficção se misturam, embora "It will need no great sagacity to discriminate between this sant [?, o imaginário] and the veritable historical and military details (...)". Pelo prefácio ficamos também a saber que a fonte militar do autor foi um seu familiar que fazia parte do regimento escocês do qual a obra fala, familiar este que "(...) participated in all the proud feelings which arose when contemplating the triumphant career of an army, whose deeds and victories are unsursaned [?] in the annals of war". Remata afirmando a sua esperança em que o leitor encontre nestes volumes algo que o atraia para melhor conhecer o regimento que apresenta algumas características que o distingue de todas as outras: "striking garb", "National feelings", "romantic sentiments and esprit de coups".
