The Genius Plague follows Neil and Paul, two brothers, who have very distinct professions. While Neil works for the NSA, Paul is a mycologist, devoted to the study of fungi. The latter suddenly goes missing on a research expedition in the Amazon rainforest, but returns later, amnesiac and extremely sick. Paul eventually recovers, but his mind appears to be enhanced, while he starts demonstrating erratic behaviours. It is discovered that the fungus Paul was studying is responsible for this change, and quickly an infection spreads, with more people falling ill and recovering only to find themselves enhanced as well, to the extent that they could be considered geniuses. However, it seems that these people lose their free will, at least partially, as the fungus seems to lead them to propagate the spores efficiently, favouring the collective instead of the individual. Now, while Paul starts seeing an opportunity behind all this, thinking that the fungus corresponds to the next stage of human evolution, Neil appears suspicious and believes that the fungus is destructive, and he starts studying the phenomenon as well. The novel analyses the relationship between this fungus and mankind, exploring the intricacies of this life form, as it appears destructive but also full of potential, as it is discovered that it may even cure degenerative diseases, generate “solar-powered” humans, and expand the abilities of the mind.
