DATE OF VISIT TO PORTUGAL * p. III - "in the interval between its recovered independence, and the return of the sovereign, John the Sixth". IMPRESSIONS * p. 16 - The exoticism felt by travellers upon arrival to Lisbon made Sophia compare herself to the man of One Thousand and One Nights, not believing that she was indeed awake and not dreaming. * p. 24 - V. Igreja da Estrela in Monumentos - Trying to outdo the Italian taste and style was absurd of the Portuguese: only ignorance, allied with presumption, can justify such act. MOTIVATION FOR WRITING THE BOOK * p. III - The author shares her opinion of Lord Orford: "Why should we not write what we see: the simple narrative of facts has often more interest than the most elaborate fiction." * pp. 18-19 - Observation made by Mr. Grey about his daughter's intention of writing a diary: "Your English friends will be delighted to hear from you; and your journal will be the best consecutive to the vein of romance in which it is said my lively little girl sometimes loves to indulge. Describe things exactly as you see them, in simple language [...]". REASONS FOR THE TRIP TO PORTUGAL * pp. 1-4 - Mr. and Mrs. Grey, accompanied by their three children (Sophia, Mordaunt e Bertha), went to Portugal for health reasons. Some of the couple's children had already died because of tuberculosis, and Sophie was severely sick at the time. As advised by Dr. Hooper, they decided to go to Portugal, where one of the children's uncles had already lived.
