Abstract

Lock In follows the story of Chris Shane. Chris is a survivor of Haden’s Syndrome, caused by a virus that spread over the world, leaving one percent of the victims completely paralyzed but awake and aware. The condition called Lock In, and similar to locked-in syndrome, becomes known as Haden’s Syndrome, and its victims, Hadens. With the possibility of using “Threeps”, android/robotic bodies that are controlled by the Haden’s brain, all people who suffer from the illness can fully function in society, giving rise to new politics and economies dedicated to Haden society. In the novel, Chris is an FBI agent investigating a murder case related to a Haden, which was done through an Integrator, a person who can receive a Haden’s conscience and rent their body for a time. As Chris and his partner Leslie investigate further, they discover a plot against the Haden world which could have lasting effects in the whole economic system.
