dc.description.authorBIOGRAFIA Nasceu em Blackrock em 1760 e embora começasse como pedreiro, cedo demonstrou talento para o desenho e estudou em Dublin. Foi aluno em "The Drawing school of the Dublin Society" (1775). Em 1786 foi um dos sete arquitectos consultados quanto ao alongamento da Câmara dos Comuns. Veio a Portugal em 1788 a pedido de William Benton Conyngham com a missão de fazer alguns desenhos do Mosteiro da Batalha. Em 1802 foi para Cádiz onde residiu durante sete anos. Estudou arquitectura e desempenhou funções diplomáticas. Acabou por se fixar em Inglaterra em 1809 onde se dedicou a preparar alguns estudos sobre arquitectura.

V No prefácio da obra, o autor expressa a sua intenção de corrigir alguns erros e completar algumas lacunas deixados em relatos anteriores feitos por outros viajantes seus compatriotas. O autor refere ainda a necessidade de fazer uma selecção cuidada para a sua obra, visto tratar-se de um país que sempre fora aliado político da Inglaterra em diversos aspectos. As duas fontes importantes de que o autor se socorreu para a elaboração da sua obra foram: - os próprios escritores nativos; - as impressões e inquéritos do próprio autor. Por último, o autor faz uma referência às fontes das ilustrações incluídas na obra. DEDICATÓRIA * p.
