dc.text | Lisbon: “To my mind, Lisbon is a city for the wanderer rather than for the determined sighteseer. It is a delightful place in which to stroll around, with no aim or objective in view, for there is something fascinating going on everywhere and for practically twenty-four hours a day [...]. “Lisbon above all is for the dilettante, who will put off until tomorrow the sightseeing which ought to be done today; instead he will take his time over coffee on the terrace, having his shoes cleaned at the same time, or wander through the narrow old streets below São Jorge and peer into cavernous shops, or cross the river for the sake of the views, or sit in the sun beneath a palm tree on one of the tiny terraced gardens ad sleepily watch the ships come and go. It is a city of easy-going people who have the tie and the desire to be friendly. It is not meant for go-getters and time-and-motion study groups. My advice to the visitor is to forget to wind his watch, for perhaps the secret of that inner happiness which Lisbon radiates is that nobody ever knows the time or, knowing it, cares.” | |
